Zimbabwe’s Level Four lockdown has been extended for another two weeks as Covid case numbers remain too high to relax the measures, according to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Speaking at State House in Harare, the President urged all Zimbabweans to get vaccinated in order for the country to return to normal economic and social activity as soon as possible.
Mnangagwa also voiced his concern at the surge in infections in neighbouring countries. The third coronavirus wave began in localised areas at the beginning of June, leading to tighter restrictions in areas including Kwekwe, Kariba, Hurungwe and Makonde.
As the third wave spread to other areas, the government moved the restrictions to Level Four, including more curfews, a ban on intercity travel and urging people to work from home wherever possible. In addition, schools are to remain closed.
The average number of daily infections during the third wave peaked on 15 June and have been in gradual decline ever since. Yet the average number remains around 30 times as severe as between infection waves.
The President said: “Unfortunately, the number of new cases and deaths per day remains unacceptably high. It is for this reason that the current Level Four lockdown has to be extended by another two weeks. I urge us all to comply with requirements of this emergency.”
Mnangagwa also called on Zimbabweans to get the Covid vaccinations: “Everyone eligible for vaccination must get vaccinated urgently. There is no good reason to delay. Rather, we must all feel the urge and responsibility to protect ourselves, our families, our neighbours, and thus our nation,” he stated.
Via its mass vaccination drive, outpacing its regional peers, over 1.86 million people in Zimbabwe have received their first dose, with 1.02 million having received both doses.
