The main opposition leader in Zimbabwe, Nelson Chamisa, has pledged economic prosperity and no more corruption during the launch of his party's campaign for the upcoming elections next month.
Leader of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party, Chamisa, is running against President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who has led the ruling Zanu-PF party since Robert Mugabe was ousted back in 2017.
Chamisa launched his "For Everyone" campaign in the city of Gweru, pledging to repair the country's economic crises.
The 45-year-old politician and lawyer cited the lack of development in Zimbabwe, stating there was not much to show following 43 years of democracy, Reuters news agency reports.
"All we see is poverty, unemployment and millions going to the diaspora," Chamisa told thousands of supporters.
"They have been banning our campaigns, but no one will ban us from people's hearts," the opposition leader went on to say.
Chamisa pledged to deal with widespread corruption and misuse of Zimbabwe's resources by the elite, adding that the country should benefit everyone.
This time around is Chamisa's second bid for the presidency and his first under the CCC, which was inaugurated early in 2022.
Furthermore, back in 2018, Chamisa became the country's youngest presidential candidate in history, yet suffered a narrow defeat to incumbent Mnangagwa in the disputed poll, the Reuters report adds.
The CCC leader said his party would be vigilant against electoral malpractice: "We will not accept a rigged election this time," he stated, whilst pledging additional reforms such as an improvement to salaries for the civil service.
The election, scheduled for 23rd August, is predicted to be close, with Mnangagwa and Chamisa both receiving support throughout the country.
Chamisa is now planning to take his campaign to Zimbabwe's countryside in an effort to win over the historical Zanu-PF voters.
