Zimbabwe has launched a nationwide strategy to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to promote economic modernisation, industrial development, and digital transformation, according to Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), a TV BRICS partner.

The four-year plan, named the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2026–2030, was unveiled by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who urged institutions across the country to embrace emerging technologies and expand AI-driven innovation to boost the national economy.

The government stated that the strategy aims to create opportunities in key sectors such as education, manufacturing, and information and communication technologies, while enabling Zimbabwe to play a more active role in the fast-changing global digital economy.

At the launch, President Mnangagwa highlighted that artificial intelligence is transforming economies worldwide and called on national institutions to enhance technological capabilities to support sustainable socio-economic growth.

He added that developing digital infrastructure and technological independence will be crucial for the country’s future competitiveness.

Under the initiative, the government will set up dedicated Artificial Intelligence Centres of Excellence at higher and tertiary education institutions. These centres will foster research, innovation, and skills development, while providing students and local communities with greater access to advanced digital training.

Officials also plan to reform the national education system by enhancing STEM programs and incorporating coding and data literacy at all levels, from primary schools to universities.

Authorities describe the new strategy as a key move toward creating a digitally resilient economy, using artificial intelligence to drive innovation, enhance public services, and broaden economic opportunities throughout Zimbabwe.
