The government of Zimbabwe has implemented strict measures to curb the third wave of coronavirus.
Only those with a negative Covid certificate provided from a handful of selected health facilities will be permitted to enter and leave the country as from August.
The initiative comes at a time when Zimbabwe domesticates the African Union Trusted Travel initiative (AU-TT).
As from 1 August, travellers planning international trips will be required to attend a designated AUTT accredited laboratory for a PCR test.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Health: “The Trusted Travel Platform will be fully available for use from 1st of August 2021.”
Authorities believe the steep increase in coronavirus cases is, in part, due to free movement of people utilising forged negative PCR test results.
There are now almost 100,000 cumulative Covid cases in Zimbabwe and 3,173 fatalities at the time of writing.
In addition, concerns are mounting about another wave of the virus, which according to authorities could be heightened by new variants coming from overseas.
A Health Ministry statement said: “The Ministry of Health is therefore pleased to announce the launch of the Trusted Travel Platform in Zimbabwe. We are confident that this platform will ease travel for both travellers into and out of the country.”
The AUTT initiative was devised by the AU, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and other partners including PanaBios to support member states standardise and boost their health screening systems.
